Cherating Nightlife
What to Do at Night in Cherating
Though the white-sand beaches of the Perhentian Islands are incomparable, Cherating’s mellow, languid and leisurely pace and atmosphere give them a run for their money. It isn’t as commercially developed as Malaysia’s other beachside destinations – this east coast strip is starkly barren with its wide expanse of shoreline dotted with intermittent guesthouses, chalets, hotels and other businesses. Furthermore, the beach is not exclusive to hotel guests so you’re likely to see an eclectic band of visitors enjoying the sun, surf and sand.
Most importantly Cherating is known as the site of the first Club Med in Asia as well as the spot for some of the best wave breaks in the country. Yet there is something oddly appealing and alluring with this coastal town – there are a lot of visitors who come here for a week and stay for a year! The town doesn’t boast much in the way of nightlife offerings – in fact the beach and spas see more action. Yet there is a scattering of bars and good restaurants that boast hard-to-resist views along Cherating’s shoreline. Plus if you’re hard-pressed for an ice-cold pint, the hotel bars will come through no matter what.

Don’t Tell Mama
One of the hippest bars in town, this beachside place is a great place to stop by for an impromptu ice cold beer. The views from the Caribbean-style shack are excellent and they have free Wi-Fi access. Sometimes there are spur-of-the-moment barbecues along the water’s edge.

This newly-opened establishment stands apart from other joints along Cherating Beach. Located right beside the river, where you can catch sight of fireflies at night if it’s really dark, this nightspot has a live band on certain nights – The Blues Band from Kuala Lumpur. The drinks selection is limited at this riverside bar – if you’re looking for a glass of wine, you’ll have better luck elsewhere.

The Deadly NightShade Bar @ The Shadow of the Moon at Half Past Four
With a name that’s certainly a mouthful, The Deadly Nightshade Bar is located within The Shadow of the Moon at Half Past Four – one of Cherating’s budget-friendly guesthouses. There’s a sign that states they serve warm beer, lousy food and have poor service, but this is a lie – though the food and drink menu may be limited, the atmosphere as well as the company at this watering hole is undeniably stellar.
